Before you start building a website, you need to choose a name and a domain.
Choosing the right name and domain for your website is incredibly important. They are the first two things that people notice about your website and as you know, first impressions are important!
It may take you a while to make a decision, and this is often a step that people get hung up on. Read some of these recommendations and go with your gut instinct. The domain has to be available for you to use so keep that in mind!
Recommendations For Deciding on a Name and Domain
I recommend choosing a name that:
- Closely matches the name of your business
- Explain’s the purpose of your website
- Is as short and succinct as possible (no more than 3 words)
- You like and feel confident sharing with your friends and on social media
I recommend choosing a domain that:
- Closely matches the name of your website
- Relates to the content on your website
- Is no longer than 3 words
- Has an extension that is related to your website/business (.tech)
How I Chose My Name and Domain
For this website:
I chose the name Austin Howard Tech because it’s my personal website about technology.
It’s identical to the name of my business, it’s obvious that this is my personal website because I’m using my name, and of course Tech refers to technology. It’s short and simple, and I share it all over social media!
Likewise, I chose the domain austinhoward.tech since it nicely matched the name of my website, and also because the .tech was FREE with HostGator’s amazing web hosting service!
Choosing a Domain
Some people say that you should choose .com for your domain extension.
I’ve also seen a lot of people say that the extension doesn’t make a huge difference.
You at least want your domain extension to resemble the content of purpose of your website. If you’re considering making a website about baking, you could try something with .bake or .cook for the extension!
Never be afraid to be creative. Choose a name and domain sounds cool to you! If you like it, someone else probably will too. 😊
